FORMER PRESIDENT OF INDIA
DR A P J ABDUL KALAM

"Convergence of Technologies"

Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, the former president of India, will deliver a speech, “Evolution of Technology Leaders” at the British Institute of Technology and E-Commerce (BITE) at 12.15pm on Tuesday, 10 June.

Dr Kalam, who was president of India, 2002 to 2007, is one of the country’s most renowned scientists. He pioneered India’s self reliance in defense and aerospace systems and his partnership with other nuclear scientists led to India becoming a nuclear weapon state. He led a team of 500 experts in developing Technology Vision 2020 which outlined the stages necessary to transform India into a developed nation by 2020. A professor of technology and societal transformation at Anna University in Chennai, he works with students to develop his vision for a developed India. Dr Kalam received India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna in 1997.

In his speech, Dr Kalam will outline a goal-driven vision that can enable people of all cultures and businesses to unite in common goals to create the buildings block of a new society. In his book, Envisioning an Empowered Nation he says, "We must get rid of the inferiority complex and defeat the defeatist spirit that plagues us. We must celebrate our successes and encourage the talented to work for missions which will bring glory to India."

It is the aspirations of the young which Dr Kalam believes will ignite India through the application of pioneering technology and science. In his speech he will discuss how technology will be the prime mover in achieving developed nation status

improving areas such as agriculture, manufacturing and healthcare and creating an integrated knowledge economy.
