11th August 2009 - 'Reaching Out to Communities' Seminar at BITE
FORGING NEW LINKS IN THE OLYMPIC BOROUGH:
The British Institute of Technology and E-Commerce hosted a seminar on the 11th August at Crick Hall on the theme of 'Reaching Out to Communities'. A hard-hitting introduction by the Institute's Director, Dr Muhammad Farmer, focusing on the social problems of the area, did not allow any of the speakers to be complacent and there were interesting presentations regarding the challenges that Newham faces in its role as a host of the 2012 Olympic Games. Ward Councillor A.K.Sheikh mentioned the problems of anti-social behaviour and the Borough Commander of the Metropolitan Police outlined some of the ways that these are being tackled - so far with some success. However, the issue of unemployment was a particular concern, as Mr Tahir Mirza, the Customer Service Operations Manager of Staratford Jobcentre Plus discovered from questions put to him by members of the audience.
Although the meeting wasn't intended to propose any hard and fast solutions to the borough's many problems, it did serve as a reminder that the process to resolve them continues. BITE will surely play its part in this.
