Nano Science Seminar

07th October 2009 - Seminar at BITE

Nano Science Seminar at Crick Hall, BITE:

Dr Alan Smith, the Technology Advisor to TESCO, gave an exclusive seminar on 7th October at BITE, offering some valuable information about nanoscience and its applications in industry.  In his introductory remarks, he explained the main aspects of nanotechnology and demonstrated some of the uses of nanomaterials.  The main applications of the technical device of nanotubes were highlighted, taking as an example carbon nanotubes as the basic element of an ordinary tennis racket.

Dr Smith gave further examples of how nanostructures could be used to provide protective shields for various materials – his own shirt was made water-proof, sunscreen more effective and tennis balls could maintain their bouncing quality for longer through changes in their respective nanostructures.  The most fascinating information he gave concerned the production of colours in birds’ feathers and the protective furs of some animals, done without the use of dyes because of the role played by nanoparticles.

The seminar was a great success and was highly appreciated by the BITE staff who attended, as well as the students.
