 About BITE

The British Institute of Technology & E-commerce (BITE) is a pre-eminent Institution committed to innovation in research, consulting and education. We provide the building blocks in understanding for those who seek exceptional knowledge of technology, management and e-commerce. The programmes developed at BITE represent those sought by industry to meet the demand for exceptionally capable, multi-skilled "elite" professionals. The curriculum offers students broad-based, academic and practical experience that will enable students to learn and implement current theories in management and the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT).

“the government welcomes the work that you are doing to help address the skill needs of the technology and e-commerce industry, which is so important to the economic success of this country…”

The Prime Minister
Rt. Hon. Tony Blair (2000)

BITE is one of the most innovative Institutes in the country, and since its foundation in the year 2000 has sought to balance the traditional with the innovative. Our quest in advancing skills and knowledge has led to the development of three unique programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. At BITE we explore the ability of the user through expanding their prospects with the skills and knowledge to think critically, communicate effectively and resolve problems of the digital world. The exponential growth of the Internet has created ubiquitous opportunities within the telecommunication, pharmaceutical, entertainment, aerospace, manufacturing, energy, biotech, media, information security, and defence industries. BITE programmes are designed to develop sound theoretical and practical skills to confront change and fuse transformation with innovation.

“a unique partnership in the heart of the community and the first of its kind in the United Kingdom ”

The Vice Chancellor of University of East London
Professor Michael Thorne (2003)

The staggering growth of electronic commerce has changed the way the world does business. BITE is complementing institutions such as the British Computer Society and the Institute of Electronic Technology in the UK . To continue with this pace, our understanding, research and development must continue to acknowledge this.

“[…] it seems BITE is maturing technology through innovation”

Father of the Internet
Dr Lawrence Robert (2003)

The Internet created a new revolution linking together a large array of computer and information systems, a worldwide computer network supporting public access and standards that drive interoperability and greater cost-efficiencies. The target for all groups of users was how to maximise the potential of this new trade/information counter. The challenges of the Internet were previously overlooked, and business hit the black hole of the dotcom bust. 2000 was an important turning point for the Internet - as the enthusiasm of consumers and businesses weakened, new waves of business development and technology solutions were required. The birth of BITE sought to help many organisations avoid any misfortune brought about by the “millennium bug”, while further providing consultation and solutions for those companies looking for an online counter.

The virtual business world faced many challenges of security and compliance (Enron, WorldCom). Governments and legislation were not fast enough to safeguard businesses implement laws to protect both the public and the private. At BITE we are consistently working on how we can provide the missing links to existing fragile network infrastructure. The BITE White Paper (2000) highlighted education and awareness, technology developments and diffusion, business issues and application support. The paper proposed security models for authentication, non-repudiation, authorisation, encryption and integrity. The paper also highlighted some of the UK government's key ICT projects for e-government, education and health risks.

BITE has observed steady growth in overall Internet usage and e-commerce activity. As predicted in our research, domain registrations have grown by 30 percent. Statistically, Internet growth year on year has continued as predicted by industry gurus, a consistent rise following the dotcom blast, averaging a 25% annual growth in .com registered domain names.

ICT has revolutionised the way we communicate, work, do business, interact with communities and develop global inter-governmental links. Virtual society is rapidly changing the way we live and socialise, thus the importance of electronic security both online and offline has uncovered new waves of security threats. BITE explores and reviews the threats and vulnerabilities of online communication through our researchers and industry advisors. We confront negligence by implementing robust security measures.
