As part of the World Academic Council 2011, B|I|T|E staff and delegates took part in a selection of events between June 29th and July 1st. An invitation to the House of Commons this month was one of many highlights for the institute who indulged in a special dinner, arranged to commemorate the success and contributions The British Institute of Technology and E-commerce have made towards the education sector.

HOC-07-11

Lord Ahmed of Rotherham, Lord Errol and BITE Principal Professor Leslie Hobson each gave insightful and inspirational speeches, outlining the progress but also the difficulties the institute has faced due to the education sector being under reform by the government. Professor Hobson made clear that B|I|T|E’s participation in supporting public-private-partnerships (PPP) in its recent white paper, was one of many efforts used to help tackle the obstacles.

With its success so far, The World Academic Council 2011 will continue to break down boundaries and instead build solid relationships where education is concerned.

GRADUATE FASHION WEEK 2011

As part of Graduate Fashion Week, “All Walks Beyond The Catwalk” launched their second annual educational project this June, promoting and spreading awareness about the use of varied bodies in fashion. The campaign thrives on the belief that fashion should highlight more realistic perceptions of the female body as the “size zero” images we constantly see in the media, paint the fashion industry in a negative way.

Founder of the organisation Caryn Franklin and co-founder Debra Bourne aim to educate student designers on the importance of diversity within the industry so that they are aware of its heavy influences within society. Their ethos stretches beyond the fickle meaning of just making clothes but instead, tailoring designs that compliment all body shapes to emphasise the emotional aspect of fashion design.

At the launch, students got the opportunity to experience working on mannequins of different body shapes, ranging from sizes 8 – 18. B|I|T|E Fashion Programme Leader, Evangelia Thomadakis was present at the fashion forum.

Education Conference 2011

BITE PRINCIPAL CALLS FOR PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN STATE AND PRIVATE SECTOR IN HIGHER EDUCATION

With education being a strong area of reform for the coalition government, the aim to change and re-develop this sector is an ongoing task. This year’s Gov Net's seventh annual Education  Conference 2011, co–sponsored by BITE saw 10 high level speakers, 350 delegates and 30 service providers come together to discuss the latest educational agendas.

Edu_conf

It could be suggested that the topic of education can be somewhat controversial however the purpose of the conference was not to debate over the baggage of political drama within the system but indeed to highlight the benefits and talk about how public-private-partnerships (PPP) in education can help to broaden avenues of opportunity for prospective and current students. PPP has been considered by the government and it also has been established that joint partnerships can offer a better educational system however a lack of knowledge on the methods of public and private sectors often leave the idea undeveloped.

Edu_conf2

In his speech “Public Private Sector Partnerships in Education”, BITE Principal Professor Les Hobson OBE listed key facts that helped to emphasise the relevance of merging public and private sectors in education. He said; “the result of these partnerships have enabled the institute to introduce new degree courses whilst sustaining the highest levels of quality at affordable prices for students.” He went on to explain; “Through the partnerships, the British Institute of Technology and E-commerce has been able to address the needs of the market place directly in a much more student focused way than that put forward by its competitors, whilst still maintaining the highest quality product. Private providers, and their students, should be eligible, where appropriate, to benefit from facilities and benefits available to public providers.” Professor Leslie Hobson OBE was one of 10 high level speakers present at this year’s conference.

With Chris Gilmour, from BAM Construct also expressing the value of partnerships and collaboration along with The British Institute of Technology and E-commerce leading by example, public and private sector partnerships could be one of the new main areas the coalition government plan to focus on. There is hope that with platforms such as the Education Conference 2011 designed to bring forth these ideas, the educational sector can be subjected to positive growth and change.
